In 1925, Walter Chrysler reestablished the Maxwell Motor Company as the original Chrysler Corporation. Daimler-Benz, now known as DaimlerChrysler, purchased Chrysler in 1998. After Daimler divested Chrysler in 2007, the company remained operational as Chrysler LLC (2007-2009) and Chrysler Group LLC (2009-2014), until Fiat S.p.A. purchased it and turned it into the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (“FCA”) subsidiary Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in 2014. In 2021, Stellantis, a FCA-PSA Group (Peugeot Société Anonyme) firm formed by merger in 2021, will control Chrysler.
Chrysler’s main rival has traditionally been Cadillac, Packard, Cord, and Lincoln. From 1955 to compete with Cadillac and Lincoln, the corporation split off Imperial into a separate company, keeping Chrysler as the number two corporation. Following the discontinuation of Imperial in 1983, Chrysler became once again the top firm. It has traditionally offered luxury and near-luxury items.
