In 1989, Infiniti became the premium car division of the Japanese company Nissan. Infiniti officially launched its vehicles in North America on November 8, 1989. As of 2010, Infiniti-branded automobiles were distributed to 50 nations. As of 2020, there were new vehicle dealers in 25 countries, including North America, China, and the Middle East.

In 1989, Infiniti was created to target the premium vehicle segments in the United States that Nissan’s more mainstream image would not have serviced, as well as the Plaza Accord of 1985. Around the same time, Toyota and Honda developed their Lexus and Acura premium brands,and Infiniti was developed. Because of voluntary export restrictions imposed by Japan,automakers benefited by exporting more expensive cars to the United States.
